Trip to Sumela Monastery Black Sea Coast
60 kms south east of Trabzon, high on the cliffs of Mount Mela is Sumela Monastery. Originally a cave, it was founded by two monks, Barnabas & Sophronius in the 4th century AD. The monastery has had several repairs over the years but is still a wonderful site to visit and explore. Rooms where the monks, ate, slept and prayed make up much up the construction but also detailed wall paintings or frescoes remain and are particularly atmospheric in the oldest part of the Monastery; the original cave. Sumela Monastery is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Black Sea Coast and having now visited it we can see why.
